BECOME EXTRAORDINARY

With God nothing will be impossible. Luke 1:37

Did you know that God wants to use you to do the extraordinary? Throughout the Bible, God has used ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things for Him. People like Joseph, who was a dreamer, and despite being stuffed into a cistern and sold as a slave by his jealous brothers, became the Prime Minister of Egypt and saved both Egypt and the nation of Israel from starvation and obsolescence.

How does something that powerful happen? It takes the faith of an ordinary man like Joseph, to overcome the difficulties that others cause in their life, to have God empower them to accomplish the amazing things that they otherwise might never happen been able to do. Another example is Paul. Did you know that Paul was one of the biggest enemies of Christianity before he himself became one?

Paul traveled all over the cities around Israel seeking out Christians and having them jailed and killed, until he met God one day on his way to Damascus. God literally knocked him off of his horse. As Paul fell to the ground wondering what was happening, God asked him why he was persecuting and killing His people. Paul was blinded for the moment and was so frightened by the thought that God was actually speaking to him, immediately confessed his sin and accepted God's challenge to begin starting building churches. Paul ended up starting more churches than any of the apostles.

One of God's favorite words is impossible. Why? Because God is so good at making what looks impossible become the possible in our lives. All He asks is that we believe in Him and that He has the power to do that for ordinary people who have big faith. So, become extraordinary. Be available and willing to do whatever God wants you to accomplish, knowing that He has the power to do it. All He wants from us is to have faith, trust in Him and believe He will do it.

WHO INFLUENCES WHOM

My last piece of advice is Remember whose you are: Please notice that I didn’t say who you are; I said whose you are. You belong to Jesus Christ. God wants to use you to reach your nonChristian friends—but Satan wants to use your nonChristian friends to reach you. Don’t let him turn the tables.

 SPOTLIGHT
Rev. Hansford F. Vann, Jr., came to Second Baptist Church as a guest speaker in 1971, then stayed to assist Rev. Walter H. Hill, Jr. A year later, following Rev. Hill’s death, Rev. Vann was asked to stay on as the Shepherd of SBC. During the early years, in 1978 he met and was married to Elle Ford. From that union he gained five children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren and now has been married thirty years. His tenure at SBC is thirty-seven years.

Pastor Vann is a native to Colorado. He grew up in Denver, attended and graduated from Manuel High. After a four year stay in the Navy he returned to Denver to begin his journey to Christ. It was a rocky journey taking him through many lows in life until finally he surrendered his life to Christ.

He joined Central Baptist Church and served as a Deacon.   As he felt the call to preach he studied for seven years at Baptist Bible College and Denver Baptist Seminary. First going part time to school for a couple of years and then making the decision to go full time.

In his thirty-seven years as Pastor at Second Baptist Church he said “I have seen a lot of people come and go and experience a lot of things here. It has been a phenomenal number of people married and people who have been buried. But my greatest joy is seeing people come to Christ. We have members who have found the Lord right here at Second Baptist Church and gone on to spread the Good News throughout the country as preachers, teachers and evangelist. That is a great joy to me to know that I have been an instrument for Christ; to preach and teach and enlighten others and see them go out to do the same.”

His favorite person in scripture, his model is John the Baptist who said I must decrease so He can increase. He said “That is my life. I am just another person if God could use me that is fine.” When described as a humble person, he said “I’m not humble I am just me.”

When asked what advice would you give? He said “I have to give advise from scripture” Proverbs 3:3-5 Trust in Lord with all thy heart and lean not to own understanding, acknowledge Him in all things and He will direct your path. “Balance your life on that, when you trust on your own judgment you can fail. Sometimes when you trust on other people even though they like you they can fail. Trust in the Lord and you will never fail.”

How does it feel to be a part of the 100th year celebration for SBC?

It’s a great feeling and uplifting feeling as long as we remember it is the Lords Church. If I be lifted up I will draw all men unto men. We have celebrated our 100 year anniversary and that says that God was here and many wonderful things have happened here. It has been quite a time and for many no matter where they go SBC is home. This is God’s church!

MONEY MATTERS

Ditch Dishonesty
Sometimes in the middle of a difficult financial situation, Satan convinces God’s children that He is not going to come through for them. Some get anxious and conclude they’d better fix the situation the best way they can. At other times, the issue may not be one of adverse financial circumstances, but just the battle against plain old unadulterated greed. Whatever the motivation, in times like these, many will often make the unwise decision to abandon their integrity and succumb to dishonest measures.
When God’s people resort to dishonesty, they are in effect saying to God, “I need or desire more money than I currently have, but I don’t believe You will provide it. Therefore, I’ll make my own way through ungodly means.” This is a slap in God’s face and results in very negative consequences.
Dishonesty can take several forms, including fading an injury in order to file a lawsuit, lying about your child’s age, or using a wrong home address to get better auto insurance rates, to name a few.
One of the most powerful lessons on how to respond with integrity to an unfair employer is found in Genesis 29-31. It is the story of Jacob and his employer-uncle, Laban. Laban subjected Jacob to all kinds of deceit and inequities. He tricked Jacob into marrying his not-so-attractive older daughter, Leah, after he had agreed to word seven years for the younger, more attractive Rachel. Jacob was forced to work another seven years in order to marry the woman he loved. Laban changed compensation agreement ten times. Notwithstanding, God blessed Jacob – who happened to be a tither – to succeed. He never lowered his standard of working retaliation for Laban’s unfair treatment.
If you find yourself in unfair situation, resist the temptation. Continue to seek God’s favor. Remember that no one can disadvantage you when you walk uprightly with the Lord. Your divine destiny will prevail.
While God promises to open the windows of heaven and to pour out blessings to the tither, dishonesty will open the back door for them to flow out and never benefit you. Your blessings will end up in pockets with holes in them. A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare” (Proverbs 21:6)
Know that dishonesty can impact your entire family. Be careful not to set an example before your children of lying and cheating for financial gain. They will more than likely copy your behavior and fall into the same pit. One of the best legacies one could leave for his family is one of integrity. “The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him” (Proverbs 20:7 NKJV).

The Tongue
The Bible has a lot to say about the tongue and what it can be used for; intentionally or unintentionally, destructively or constructively. In any case we are responsible for what we say. We will be held responsible for the effect of the words we use. The effect that the spoken words can have on a person is a guaranteed result of not just the words used, but the “weight and effect” that comes with them.
All of us have been guilty of saying the wrong things at the wrong time. Try looking back and choose an incident in which you “misspoke” and then think of the effect that those words had. Now think of a time that you said the right words at the right time, to the right individual or group of people. What was that effect?
We really need to exercise extreme caution when we find ourselves in a highly charged emotional situation. It is at these times it’s better to say nothing than try “get your point across”. Ask yourself the question; what is the value of your point? Will it serve to clarify or further confuse? Would it help?
Please be aware that we can receive direction in our hearts from the LORD and purpose to speak the words and still wind up with a negative reaction that is directed towards us. This is where character comes in to play. Take a look at the Old Testament Prophets. If we have given prayer, thought and time to what we say and how we say it, it will be better all around.
Verses to read:
James 3:2-6; Proverbs 15:1; Luke 25:15 and Proverbs 25:11

MEMORY VERSE

Let us consider how we can stir up one another to love. Let us help one another to do good works. Let us not give up meeting together. Some are in the habit of doing this. Instead, let us cheer each other up with words of hope. Let us do it all the more as you see the day coming when Christ will return. Hebrews 10-24-25 NIrV

THE RELATIONSHIP

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
God the Father is God the author – the originator of all that exists. It was in His mind, first, that all took shape.
God the Son, our Savior, is God the artisan – the artist, the Creator of all that exists. He brought into being all that had been originally formulated in His Father’s mind.
God the Holy Spirit is God the agent who presents these facts to both my mind and my spiritual understanding so that they become both real and relative to me as an individual.
Now the beautiful relationships given to us repeatedly in Scripture between God and man are those of a father to his children and a shepherd to his sheep. These concepts were first conceived in the mind of God our Father. They were made possible and practical through the work of Christ. They are confirmed and made real in me through the agency of the
gracious Holy Spirit.
So when the statement is made by a man or woman that “The Lord is my shepherd, “ it immediately implies a profound yet practical working relationship between a human being and his Maker.
It links a lump of common clay to divine destiny – it means a mere mortal becomes the cherished object of divine diligence.
